ABOUT THIS COURSE

MSMWHS212 Undertake first response to fire incidents is the manufacturing-package fire response unit — built for industrial, processing and warehouse environments where the workforce is expected to identify, contain or fight an incipient fire safely while the broader emergency response is mobilised.

The unit covers the practical fire-response skills of an industrial worker: recognising fire types and stages, selecting the right extinguisher or hose reel, attacking an incipient fire safely, knowing when to stop and evacuate, and supporting the broader emergency response and evacuation procedures.

It is widely required across processing, chemical, gas, food manufacturing and warehouse environments, and complements the PUA-package warden and emergency response units. Many sites combine MSMWHS212 with a warden or emergency control unit as a full first-response program.

Undertake first response to fire incidents

What You Will Learn

Course Content

This course covers the following knowledge and practical skills:
  • Fire chemistry — heat, fuel, oxygen and the fire tetrahedron
  • Stages of fire growth — incipient, growth, fully developed, decay
  • Site fire-detection and alarm systems
  • Selecting the right extinguisher for the fire class
  • Hose reel deployment and operation
  • Working with an attack and back-up partner
  • Smoke and gas hazards — when to stop and evacuate
  • Classes of fire — A, B, C, D, E, F — and their typical sources
  • When fire response is appropriate and when evacuation is the only safe option
  • Fire extinguisher types — water, foam, CO₂, dry chemical, wet chemical
  • PASS technique — Pull, Aim, Squeeze, Sweep
  • Fire blankets and their applications
  • Communication during fire response — radio, alarms, runners
  • Post-incident — securing the area, reporting, equipment replacement

Assessment

How You’ll Be Assessed

Assessment combines written knowledge questions with supervised practical performance tasks completed during the course.

Practical Performance Tasks

1
Identify fire classes from a set of provided scenarios and select the correct extinguisher
2
Conduct a pre-use inspection of a fire extinguisher and hose reel
3
Extinguish a live training fire using the PASS technique with the correct extinguisher
4
Deploy a hose reel from its stowed position, charge the line and apply water to a target
5
Use a fire blanket to extinguish a simulated cooking or clothing fire
6
Communicate the fire response to a simulated incident controller by radio
7
Recognise a deteriorating situation and execute a controlled withdrawal

Written Assessment

Short-answer written questions covering fire chemistry, fire classes, extinguisher selection, the PASS technique, the limits of first-response capability and the decision to fight or evacuate.

Who Should Attend

Is This Course Right for You?

  • Workers in manufacturing, processing, warehouse and industrial environments
  • Members of site first-response and fire teams
