ABOUT THIS COURSE

Enter and Work in Confined Spaces is the RII (Resources and Infrastructure) pathway for confined space work — combining the practical entry skills with hazard analysis, gas testing and permit systems required across mining, civil and construction operations.

This course delivers RIIWHS202E Enter and work in confined spaces alongside MSMPER200 (work in accordance with an issued permit), MSMWHS201 (conduct hazard analysis) and MSMWHS217 (gas test atmospheres). It is the standard pathway for workers in resources, civil and infrastructure projects who need to enter or supervise entry to tanks, pits, manholes, tunnels and other confined spaces.

The RII pathway is widely recognised across mining, quarrying, civil construction and infrastructure maintenance. For workers in manufacturing or chemical processing, the MSM pathway (Confined Space Entry) covers the equivalent skills under the Manufacturing training package.

Units of Competency

What’s Included

Your Statement of Attainment will cover the following nationally recognised unit:

RIIWHS202E
Enter and work in confined spaces
MSMPER200
Work in accordance with an issued permit
MSMWHS201
Conduct hazard analysis
MSMWHS217
Gas test atmospheres

What You Will Learn

Course Content

This course covers the following knowledge and practical skills:
  • WHS legislation — confined space definition, duty holder obligations, Reg 62–76
  • JHA and risk assessment specific to RII confined space work
  • Roles and responsibilities — authorised person, standby person and entrant
  • Atmospheric hazards — O2 levels, toxic gases, LEL and combustible atmospheres
  • Testing procedure — multi-level atmospheric testing from outside before entry
  • Safe entry sequence and the standard 10-step procedure
  • Rescue planning — non-entry and entry rescue methods per Reg 74
  • Hierarchy of controls applied to confined space hazards
  • Confined space hazards in mining, civil and infrastructure environments
  • Permit to work system — completing, issuing and managing entry permits
  • Lock-out/tag-out (LOTO) and energy isolation before entry
  • Gas detector selection, calibration and bump testing
  • Continuous monitoring during work inside a confined space
  • Forced air ventilation — selection and use
  • Communication and signage requirements

Assessment

How You’ll Be Assessed

Assessment combines written knowledge questions with supervised practical performance tasks completed during the course.

Practical Performance Tasks

1
Complete a hazard analysis and risk assessment for an RII confined space scenario
2
Complete a confined space entry permit including all required fields
3
Demonstrate lock-out/tag-out (LOTO) procedure on a simulated energy source
4
Calibrate a multi-gas detector and perform a bump test
5
Test confined space atmosphere at multiple levels from outside before entry
6
Interpret gas detector readings and determine the appropriate action
7
Demonstrate safe confined space entry following the standard entry sequence
8
Perform the standby person role during a simulated entry
9
Set up and use forced air ventilation in a confined space scenario
10
Develop a rescue plan for a confined space entry scenario

Written Assessment

Written knowledge test covering RII confined space legislation, hazard analysis methodology, gas testing theory, permit systems and emergency procedures.

Who Should Attend

Is This Course Right for You?

  • Mining and quarrying operators and maintenance personnel
  • Civil construction workers — pits, manholes, tunnels, tanks
  • Infrastructure maintenance workers — water, sewerage, telecoms, utilities
  • Workers required to enter or supervise entry to confined spaces on RII sites
  • Standby persons and confined space supervisors
  • Anyone completing site induction requirements for RII confined space work
