ABOUT THIS COURSE

Conduct Lifting Operations delivers RIIHAN203E — the foundation lifting awareness qualification for workers who attach loads to lifting equipment, communicate with operators and direct lifting tasks on site.

This course covers the practical skills to plan a lift, select and inspect lifting gear, sling loads correctly, communicate with the operator using approved signals and complete the lift safely. It is the standard awareness qualification across construction, civil, mining and industrial sites — a step below dogman or rigger high risk work licences.

Recommended for workers who handle and direct loads but do not require the full Dogging (DG) High Risk Work Licence. For workers who need the licence, this course is a good preparation pathway before progressing to RIIHAN206 / TLID2003 dogging units.

What You Will Learn

Course Content

This course covers the following knowledge and practical skills:
  • WHS legislation — duty of care for lifting operations and load handling
  • Lifting plan basics — load weight, centre of gravity, lift path and exclusion zones
  • Lifting gear types — chains, slings, shackles, hooks, eyebolts and lifting beams
  • Working Load Limit (WLL) and Safe Working Load (SWL) — what they mean and how to apply
  • Sling angles — how lift angle affects sling capacity (60°, 90°, 120°)
  • Pre-use inspection of lifting gear — chains, slings and accessories
  • Defect recognition — wear, damage and out-of-service criteria
  • Slinging techniques — basket, choker, vertical and bridle hitches
  • Load attachment — secure connection points and load stability
  • Tag lines — when and how to use tag lines for load control
  • Approved hand signals — directing crane and EWP operators
  • Two-way radio communication during lifts
  • Working near powerlines and overhead obstructions
  • Tandem and complex lifts — when to escalate to a dogger or rigger

Assessment

How You’ll Be Assessed

Assessment combines written knowledge questions with supervised practical performance tasks completed during the course.

Practical Performance Tasks

1
Calculate the weight of a simulated load and determine appropriate lifting gear
2
Conduct pre-use inspection of slings, chains and shackles — identify defects
3
Sling a load using basket, choker and bridle configurations
4
Direct a simulated lift using approved hand signals
5
Communicate with an operator via two-way radio during a simulated lift
6
Use a tag line to control load orientation during a simulated lift
7
Complete a lift plan for a multi-step lifting scenario
8
Identify and respond to a defective sling discovered during inspection

Written Assessment

Knowledge assessment covering lifting legislation, WLL/SWL principles, sling angles, lifting gear selection, hand signals and emergency response.

Who Should Attend

Is This Course Right for You?

  • Construction and civil workers who attach loads or direct lifts
  • Manufacturing and warehouse workers handling overhead crane lifts
  • Mining and quarrying workers in load handling roles
  • Riggers, scaffolders and steel fixers requiring lifting awareness
  • Workers preparing for a Dogging (DG) High Risk Work Licence
  • Anyone required to attach loads to a crane or EWP as part of their role
