ABOUT THIS COURSE

Operate Breathing Apparatus is the standalone accredited SCBA training unit — MSMWHS216 — for workers who need formal certification in the use of breathing apparatus for emergency response, confined space standby or industrial applications.

This course covers the selection, donning, doffing and use of self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) in the context of industrial environments. It is the accredited version of the unit; for client-specific non-accredited SCBA training, see our non-accredited Operate Breathing Apparatus course.

Suitable as a standalone qualification for workers who do not require the full confined space rescue qualification but need accredited SCBA competency for their role.

What You Will Learn

Course Content

This course covers the following knowledge and practical skills:
  • Types of breathing apparatus — SCBA vs supplied air vs air-purifying respirators
  • Pre-use inspection — checking SCBA before each use
  • Doffing procedure — safe removal and decontamination
  • Facepiece seal check — positive and negative pressure tests
  • Emergency procedures — low air alarm response and emergency breathing
  • Regulatory requirements — legislation and standards for SCBA use in the workplace
  • SCBA components — cylinder, regulator, facepiece, harness and alarms
  • Donning procedure — correct fitting and adjustment under time conditions
  • Air supply management — cylinder pressure, duration and buddy checks
  • Working in SCBA — mobility, communication and task limitations
  • Maintenance, storage and records — post-use inspection and documentation

Assessment

How You’ll Be Assessed

Assessment combines written knowledge questions with supervised practical performance tasks completed during the course.

Practical Performance Tasks

1
Select appropriate SCBA for a given industrial scenario
2
Perform pre-use inspection of SCBA components and record results
3
Don SCBA correctly and perform positive and negative pressure facepiece seal checks
4
Perform buddy check before simulated use
5
Work in SCBA during a simulated task scenario
6
Respond correctly to low-air alarm in a simulated emergency
7
Doff SCBA safely and complete post-use inspection and documentation

Written Assessment

Knowledge assessment covering SCBA types, components, inspection, donning/doffing, working limitations and regulatory requirements.

Who Should Attend

Is This Course Right for You?

  • Emergency response team members requiring standalone SCBA accreditation
  • Workers in chemical processing, mining and manufacturing requiring SCBA certification
