ABOUT THIS COURSE

INT029A is the operational-level HazMat program — for responders who arrive at a hazardous materials incident with the training, equipment and authority to contain, control and render the situation safe, rather than withdraw and wait.

The program builds directly on the awareness-level skill set (INT029) by adding the practical containment, mitigation and decontamination skills required at the operational tier — the level expected of designated HazMat response teams in industrial, refining, chemical and infrastructure environments.

It pairs PUAFIR324 Render hazardous materials incidents safe with TLIF3091 Dangerous Goods Training (Chemical Awareness), giving responders both the operational response skill set and the regulatory knowledge of how dangerous goods are classified, packaged, segregated and transported.

What You Will Learn

Course Content

This course covers the following knowledge and practical skills:
  • Incident size-up at the operational level — risk-based decision making
  • Establishing incident command and the responder’s place in it
  • Working under a HazMat Incident Action Plan
  • Containment strategies — diking, damming, diverting, retention
  • Plugging, patching and over-packing leaking containers
  • Vapour suppression — water curtains, foam blankets, neutralisation
  • Level A and Level B PPE selection, donning, working and doffing
  • Air management — SCBA usage, work cycles, replacement bottles
  • Decontamination corridor setup — gross, technical, fine
  • Decontaminating responders, casualties and equipment
  • Dangerous goods classes, divisions and packing groups
  • Segregation rules and incompatibility tables
  • Documentation, transport and waste handling for recovered material
  • Post-incident debrief, equipment service and team welfare

Assessment

How You’ll Be Assessed

Assessment combines written knowledge questions with supervised practical performance tasks completed during the course.

Practical Performance Tasks

1
Conduct an operational-level size-up of a simulated HazMat incident and develop an incident action plan
2
Implement containment for a simulated liquid release using diking and absorbent boom
3
Apply a plug, patch or over-pack to a leaking container under realistic conditions
4
Don, work in and doff Level A or Level B PPE under supervision with full air management
5
Set up and operate a three-stage decontamination corridor for responders and equipment
6
Apply dangerous goods segregation rules to a recovered consignment
7
Lead a post-incident debrief and complete the regulatory notification documentation

Written Assessment

Written knowledge assessment covering both units — operational containment strategies, Level A/B PPE, decontamination principles, the Australian Dangerous Goods Code, and the responder’s legal duties at a notifiable HazMat incident.
