ABOUT THIS COURSE

Confined Space Entry + Hazard Analysis extends the standard Confined Space Entry (MSM) qualification with formal hazard analysis training — equipping supervisors, safety personnel and senior workers with the skills to identify, assess and control confined space hazards systematically.

This advanced 2-3 day pathway combines all four units in the MSM confined space stream, including MSMWHS201 Conduct Hazard Analysis, which adds the JSEA/JHA methodology to the standard entry qualification.

Recommended for workers moving into supervisory or safety roles, or those required to conduct and sign off job safety and environmental analyses for confined space work.

Units of Competency

What’s Included

Your Statement of Attainment will cover the following nationally recognised unit:

MSMPER205
Enter confined space
MSMPER200
Work in accordance with an issued permit
MSMWHS217
Gas test atmospheres
MSMWHS201
Conduct hazard analysis

What You Will Learn

Course Content

This course covers the following knowledge and practical skills:
  • All content from Confined Space Entry (MSM) — permit systems, gas testing, safe entry
  • JHA — Job Hazard Analysis — systematic hazard identification framework
  • Risk assessment — likelihood and consequence matrix, risk rating
  • Control measures — selecting and implementing appropriate controls
  • Consulting with workers — involving the team in hazard identification
  • Reviewing and updating hazard analyses when conditions change
  • JSEA — Job Safety and Environmental Analysis methodology and documentation
  • Hazard categories — identification and classification of workplace hazards
  • Hierarchy of controls — applied to confined space hazards
  • Residual risk — evaluating and documenting acceptable residual risks
  • Record keeping — documenting hazard analyses and maintaining records
  • Integrating hazard analysis with the confined space permit system

Assessment

How You’ll Be Assessed

Assessment combines written knowledge questions with supervised practical performance tasks completed during the course.

Practical Performance Tasks

1
Complete a JSEA for a confined space entry scenario
2
Conduct a systematic JHA and identify hazards for a simulated maintenance task
3
Apply the hierarchy of controls to a set of identified confined space hazards
4
Complete all standard practical tasks — permit, LOTO, gas testing and safe entry

Written Assessment

Extended knowledge assessment covering hazard analysis theory, JSEA/JHA methodology, hierarchy of controls and all standard confined space theory components.

Who Should Attend

Is This Course Right for You?

  • Supervisors and leading hands responsible for confined space entry authorisation
  • Safety officers and WHS coordinators in manufacturing environments
  • Workers required to complete and sign off JSEA/JHA documentation
  • Senior maintenance and operations personnel in confined space environments
  • Anyone upgrading from standard confined space entry to the advanced qualification
