ABOUT THIS COURSE

Operate Gantry or Overhead Crane combines RIIHAN305D Operate gantry or overhead crane with RIIHAN203E Conduct lifting operations — equipping workers to safely operate pendant-controlled overhead cranes and direct the lifts they perform.

This course covers pendant-controlled gantry and overhead cranes commonly found in manufacturing, warehouse and industrial environments. It does not cover cabin-operated cranes, which require a Crane Operator High Risk Work Licence (CN, CV, CO, CT or C2/C6).

The combined RIIHAN305D + RIIHAN203E pathway is the standard for workers who both operate the crane and direct lifting operations on the floor — a common requirement in fabrication shops, warehouses and machinery handling.

Units of Competency

What’s Included

Your Statement of Attainment will cover the following nationally recognised unit:

RIIHAN305D
Operate a gantry or overhead crane
RIIHAN203E
Conduct lifting operations

What You Will Learn

Course Content

This course covers the following knowledge and practical skills:
  • Crane types — gantry, overhead bridge, monorail and jib cranes
  • Pendant control vs cabin operation — scope of this qualification
  • Pre-operational inspection of cranes and lifting gear
  • Working Load Limit (WLL) and Safe Working Load (SWL) — applying ratings
  • Lifting gear — chains, slings, shackles, hooks and lifting beams
  • Sling angles and load capacity — 60°, 90° and 120° configurations
  • Slinging techniques — basket, choker, vertical and bridle hitches
  • Load assessment — weight, centre of gravity and lift path
  • Pre-lift planning — exclusion zones, communication and signals
  • Approved hand signals for crane operators
  • Two-way radio communication during lifts
  • Safe operation — controls, speed, swing prevention and load placement
  • Tag line use for load control
  • Working near powerlines, structures and personnel
  • Emergency procedures — load drop, runaway, power failure and rescue
  • Post-operational checks and logbook entries

Assessment

How You’ll Be Assessed

Assessment combines written knowledge questions with supervised practical performance tasks completed during the course.

Practical Performance Tasks

1
Conduct pre-operational inspection of a gantry or overhead crane
2
Inspect lifting gear and identify defects
3
Calculate the weight and centre of gravity of a simulated load
4
Sling a load using appropriate hitch and lifting gear
5
Operate the crane via pendant control to perform a simulated lift
6
Direct a simulated lift using approved hand signals
7
Use a tag line to control a load during a lift
8
Demonstrate emergency stop and load lowering procedures

Written Assessment

Knowledge assessment covering crane types, lifting gear inspection, WLL/SWL principles, hand signals, safe operation and emergency procedures.
