ABOUT THIS COURSE

Safe Rigging — Climb and Rescue on Telecom Structures is the specialist telecommunications tower climbing qualification — ICTTCR203 — covering safe rigging practices, tower climbing techniques and rescue procedures for workers who maintain and service telecommunications network structures.

This course covers the unique hazards of telecom structure climbing including RF (radio frequency) exposure, climbing arrest systems, rigging for telecommunications equipment and rescue from height on steel lattice and monopole structures.

RIIWHS204E Work Safely at Heights is strongly recommended before undertaking this course. Participants should be experienced and comfortable working at height.

Units of Competency

What’s Included

Your Statement of Attainment will cover the following nationally recognised unit:

ICTTCR203
Use safe rigging practices to climb and perform rescues on telecommunications network structures

What You Will Learn

Course Content

This course covers the following knowledge and practical skills:
  • Telecommunications structure types — lattice towers, monopoles, rooftop structures and masts
  • RF exposure — non-ionising radiation awareness, safe approach and exclusion zones
  • Climbing arrest systems — shock absorbing lanyards, climbing devices and rope grabs
  • Rigging for telecom equipment — rigging practices for antennas, cables and equipment
  • Rescue from telecommunications structures — rescue planning and techniques
  • Emergency procedures — medical emergency and rescue response on tower structures
  • Hazard identification — RF exposure, structural hazards, weather and electrical risks
  • Personal protective equipment — tower climbing-specific PPE selection and use
  • Work positioning at height on tower structures — positioning devices and anchor points
  • Dropped object prevention — securing tools and equipment at height
  • Rescue systems — raising and lowering systems specific to tower rescue
  • Documentation — climb permits, site access records and post-climb reporting

Assessment

How You’ll Be Assessed

Assessment combines written knowledge questions with supervised practical performance tasks completed during the course.

Practical Performance Tasks

1
Inspect personal climbing equipment before ascending a telecommunications structure
2
Demonstrate correct climbing arrest system use while ascending a structure
3
Rig work positioning equipment at a simulated work position on a structure
4
Demonstrate dropped object prevention techniques during a simulated task
5
Execute a rescue from a tower structure — raise or lower a simulated casualty
6
Complete a climb permit and post-climb report

Written Assessment

Knowledge assessment covering RF hazards, telecom structure types, climbing arrest systems, rigging practices, rescue techniques and emergency procedures.
