ABOUT THIS COURSE

HLTPAT005 Collect specimens for drugs of abuse testing is the accredited unit for workplace drug and alcohol testing collectors — covering the legal, ethical and technical foundations of specimen collection that holds up under scrutiny.

The unit covers the full collection workflow under AS/NZS 4308 (urine) and AS/NZS 4760 (oral fluid): donor identification, chain-of-custody documentation, specimen collection procedures, on-site screening (where used), packaging for laboratory referral, and the post-collection responsibilities of the collector.

It is widely required for occupational testers in mining, transport, construction, and any workplace operating an alcohol and other drugs (AOD) policy. The competency is increasingly expected by court and Fair Work proceedings as evidence that a positive workplace test was collected to the standard required for legal weight.
