ABOUT THIS COURSE

Confined Space Rescue with SCBA is the advanced confined space rescue qualification — equipping rescue team members with the skills to enter unverified or hazardous atmospheres using self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) and perform structured rescue operations.

This course builds directly on a current confined space entry qualification (Confined Space Entry MSM, or Enter and Work in Confined Spaces RII) and is required for any worker who may act as a rescuer entering a confined space in an emergency. It covers SCBA selection, donning, doffing and use; rescue operations planning; casualty retrieval; and injury prevention during rescue activities.

Participants must hold a current confined space entry qualification before enrolling. This course meets the requirements of WHS Regulation 74 for rescue procedures in confined spaces.

Units of Competency

What’s Included

Your Statement of Attainment will cover the following nationally recognised unit:

PUASAR025
Undertake confined space rescue
PUASAR022

What You Will Learn

Course Content

This course covers the following knowledge and practical skills:
  • SCBA — types, components and limitations of self-contained breathing apparatus
  • Air supply management — cylinder pressure, duration calculations and buddy checks
  • Emergency low-air procedures — action when SCBA air supply is running low
  • Rescue planning — team roles, equipment staging and communication
  • Retrieval systems — tripod, davit arm, winch and manual retrieval lines
  • Comunication during rescue — signals, voice and radio use in confined spaces
  • Post-rescue activities — medical handover, equipment inspection and documentation
  • SCBA donning and doffing — correct procedure under time and stress conditions
  • Operational limitations — working in restricted spaces while wearing SCBA
  • Injury prevention during rescue — manual handling of casualties in confined spaces
  • Confined space rescue procedures — non-entry rescue methods before entry rescue
  • Casualty packaging and movement — securing and moving an incapacitated person
  • Decontamination procedures after working in hazardous atmospheres
  • Emergency response — fire, explosion and chemical release during rescue

Assessment

How You’ll Be Assessed

Assessment combines written knowledge questions with supervised practical performance tasks completed during the course.

Practical Performance Tasks

1
Don and doff SCBA correctly within the required time under supervised conditions
2
Perform air supply check and buddy check before simulated rescue entry
3
Demonstrate emergency low-air procedure in a simulated scenario
4
Plan a confined space rescue operation — team roles and equipment staging
5
Perform a non-entry rescue from a simulated confined space
6
Perform an entry rescue using SCBA from a simulated confined space
7
Package and retrieve an incapacitated casualty from a confined space using a retrieval system
8
Demonstrate correct communication protocol during a simulated rescue
9
Complete a post-rescue equipment inspection and incident documentation

Written Assessment

Comprehensive knowledge assessment covering SCBA theory, rescue planning, injury prevention, confined space rescue procedures and all relevant legislation.

Who Should Attend
