ABOUT THIS COURSE

This program covers the operation of self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) for industrial and emergency response use — built on the content of MSMWHS216 Operate breathing apparatus, but delivered as non-accredited training tailored to client site requirements.

Participants learn the same equipment checks, donning sequences, air management discipline and emergency procedures expected in the accredited unit. The training follows accredited training requirements throughout — the only difference is that a Certificate of Attendance is issued at completion rather than a Statement of Attainment.

It is the right option when a client site has specified breathing apparatus competency for access or for a specific role, but does not require a nationally recognised qualification. Programs are typically scheduled in-house using the client’s own SCBA equipment so that practice and assessment use the kit participants will actually wear.

Units of Competency

What’s Included

Your Statement of Attainment will cover the following nationally recognised unit:

MSMWHS216
Operate breathing apparatus (non-accredited delivery)

What You Will Learn

Course Content

This course covers the following knowledge and practical skills:
  • SCBA components — cylinder, regulator, mask, harness, gauges
  • Pre-use inspection and serviceability check
  • Donning sequence and buddy verification
  • Air management — work duration, reserve, return-to-fresh-air
  • Working safely in SCBA — communication, vision limits, exertion
  • Recognising and responding to low-air alarms
  • Emergency procedures — entanglement, regulator failure, casualty rescue
  • Doffing sequence and post-use checks
  • Cylinder change and turnaround procedures
  • Cleaning, sanitising and storing SCBA between uses
  • Recording inspections, use logs and faults
  • Working under permit and observer/standby protocols

Assessment

How You’ll Be Assessed

This is non-accredited training. Participants complete supervised practical activities and a knowledge review during the course. A Certificate of Attendance is issued on successful completion — no Statement of Attainment is awarded.

Practical Performance Tasks

1
Conduct a complete pre-use SCBA inspection following the manufacturer’s checklist
2
Don the SCBA correctly with a buddy check and verify positive pressure
3
Operate in SCBA through a controlled task — work, communicate, monitor air
4
Respond to a simulated low-air alarm and execute a return-to-fresh-air procedure
5
Conduct a controlled doff and post-use equipment check
6
Change a depleted cylinder and return the SCBA to service-ready state

Written Assessment

A short knowledge review covering SCBA components, air management, emergency procedures and pre-use inspection. The review confirms understanding before practical activities begin.

Who Should Attend

Is This Course Right for You?

  • Industrial workers required to wear SCBA on a client site
  • Emergency response team members at facilities with respiratory hazards
  • Maintenance and operations crews entering atmospheres with airborne contaminants
  • Workers covering for accredited team members on a short-term basis
  • Clients who need a focused, site-specific SCBA program without the accredited overhead
