ABOUT THIS COURSE

HLTAID011 Provide First Aid is the nationally recognised qualification for first aid officers — equipping you to respond confidently to a wide range of emergencies in the workplace and community.

This course covers the full scope of first aid response including CPR, casualty assessment, management of bleeding, shock, fractures, burns, asthma, anaphylaxis, and other common medical emergencies. It includes the HLTAID009 CPR unit as a core component.

The qualification is valid for 3 years, with the CPR component requiring annual renewal. It meets the requirements of Safe Work Australia’s Code of Practice for First Aid in the Workplace.

Course Content

This course covers the following knowledge and practical skills:
  • DRSABCD action plan and primary survey
  • AED operation and safe use
  • Bleeding, shock and wound management
  • Burns, scalds and electric shock injuries
  • Envenomation — snake, spider and marine bites
  • Casualty assessment, handover and reporting
  • CPR technique for adults, children and infants
  • Recovery position and airway management
  • Fractures, dislocations and soft tissue injuries
  • Asthma, anaphylaxis and diabetic emergencies
  • Heat and cold related illnesses

Assessment

How You’ll Be Assessed

Assessment combines written knowledge questions with supervised practical performance tasks completed during the course.

Practical Performance Tasks

Perform 2 minutes of uninterrupted CPR on an adult manikin demonstrating correct technique

Perform CPR on an infant manikin demonstrating correct technique and hand placement
3
Follow AED prompts correctly during a resuscitation scenario
4
Manage a simulated bleeding casualty including pressure, elevation and bandaging
5
Manage a casualty with a suspected fracture using appropriate immobilisation
6
Respond to anaphylaxis and asthma scenarios using auto-injector and inhaler

Written Assessment

Knowledge assessment covering ARC guidelines, casualty management principles and legal responsibilities.

Entry Requirements

  • No formal prerequisites — open to all
  • Minimum 14 years of age
  • Physical capacity to kneel and perform 2 minutes of uninterrupted CPR on a manikin on the floor
  • Appropriate attire — long pants and closed-in shoes
  • Valid Unique Student Identifier (USI) required for certification
  • Reasonable English language and literacy skills for written assessment
