ABOUT THIS COURSE

Confined Space Entry (MSM) is the manufacturing pathway for confined space entry — combining permit systems, safe entry procedures and atmospheric gas testing into a single comprehensive qualification.

This course covers the practical skills to safely enter and work in confined spaces within manufacturing and industrial environments, in accordance with WHS Regulation Part 4.3 and the Confined Spaces Code of Practice. It includes gas detector calibration, bump testing, reading interpretation and the safe entry sequence.

Recommended for workers in manufacturing, chemical processing, food production, utilities and industrial maintenance. For the RII (Resources & Infrastructure) pathway, see Enter and Work in Confined Spaces.

Units of Competency

What’s Included

Your Statement of Attainment will cover the following nationally recognised unit:

MSMPER205
Enter confined space
MSMPER200
Work in accordance with an issued permit
MSMWHS217
Gas test atmospheres

What You Will Learn

Course Content

This course covers the following knowledge and practical skills:
  • WHS legislation — confined space definition, duty holder obligations, Reg 62–76
  • Risk assessment and SWMS for confined space entry
  • Roles and responsibilities — authorised person, standby person and entrant
  • Atmospheric hazards — O2 deficiency/enrichment, toxic gases (H2S, CO, CO2), LEL
  • Gas detector calibration — full calibration and bump test procedures
  • Interpreting gas detector readings and taking appropriate action
  • Safe entry sequence — 10-step procedure from risk assessment to entry
  • Rescue planning — rescue team, equipment and procedures per Reg 74
  • Confined space hazards — atmospheric, physical and biological hazards
  • Permit to work system — completing, issuing and managing entry permits
  • Lock-out/tag-out (LOTO) — energy isolation before entry
  • Gas detector selection — 4-gas detector features and sensor types
  • Testing procedure — testing from outside at all levels before entry
  • Continuous monitoring during work inside a confined space
  • Ventilation — forced air ventilation types and procedures
  • Signage and communication requirements

Assessment

How You’ll Be Assessed

Assessment combines written knowledge questions with supervised practical performance tasks completed during the course.

Practical Performance Tasks

1
Complete a risk assessment and SWMS for a confined space entry scenario
2
Complete a confined space entry permit including all required fields
3
Demonstrate lock-out/tag-out (LOTO) procedure on a simulated energy source
4
Calibrate a multi-gas detector and document calibration results
5
Perform a bump test on a multi-gas detector
6
Test confined space atmosphere at multiple levels from outside before entry
7
Interpret gas detector readings and determine appropriate action for each scenario
8
Demonstrate safe confined space entry following the 10-step entry sequence
9
Perform the standby person role during a simulated entry
10
Complete a rescue plan for a confined space entry scenario

Written Assessment

Written knowledge test covering confined space legislation, hazard identification, gas testing theory, permit systems and emergency procedures.

Who Should Attend

Is This Course Right for You?

  • Process plant operators, maintenance personnel and utility workers in manufacturing
  • Chemical processing, food production and industrial workers
  • Workers required to enter tanks, vessels, silos, pits or other confined spaces
